Excerpt
“Our final guest has arrived,” Emily announced triumphantly, her eyes mischievously meeting those of her partner-in-crime, Pieter, who’d come up with the master plan to challenge Simeon to a ‘cook-off.' Pieter returned her stare and smirked as Simeon’s jaw dropped in realization of what he was seeing.

Emily knew they had done the right thing when she saw the way Simeon and Bastian stared at one another, their eyes as large as saucers. The electricity between them was palpable. Simeon could be a bit of a motor mouth, but on seeing Bastian Roth standing in the open plan kitchen, Simeon Duchamp appeared to be lost for words.

“Good to meet you,” Pieter said, stepping in to break the awkward silence and offering a hand to Bastian. “You have great taste in art,” he joked.

“Ah, yes, the collection I purchased.” Bastian smiled warmly, shaking Pieter’s slender, elegant hand in both of his own. “How could I resist. Your partner is a very talented painter. She captures your beauty so well.” Pieter blushed. Bastian turned and strolled behind the kitchen island to greet Simeon.

Sim looked nervously up through his dark lashes, and the two men paused for a moment, just staring. “I, uh, didn’t know you were coming,” Simeon said, his breathy French accented voice surprised, and as light as a whisper on the wind. Simeon leaned in and gave Bast the traditional French greeting of "Fairela bise,” reserved for family, friends, and intimate acquaintances, kissing him on both cheeks. Bastian kissed him in return, and when the men drew back, both looked flushed from their closeness.

“Uh, Emily and Pieter invited me to dinner. I had no idea you would be here either”, Bastian said privately to Simeon’s ear. “It appears we’ve been set up.”

Simeon was outraged. He’d never needed to be set up in his whole life. Sim’s gaze darted to Pieter and Emily who both bit their bottom lips and glanced innocently at the ceiling and floor. He shook his head, pursed his lips, and then said. “A moment,” to Bastian, to excuse himself and stalked away. Simeon grabbed Pieter by his forearm and dragged him down the hallway.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Simeon said, sounding outraged, his bony index fingers jabbing Pieter in the ribs. Pieter roared with laughter, Simeon knew his most ticklish places by heart.

“We just thought we’d help nudge things along, you know.”

“But I’m doing just fine. I told you. I met him for coffee last week, and we had a chat. We both said sorry. It’s all cool.”

“But it’s been a week. A week is a long time. Did you call him? Did he call you?”

“Well, no. It’s, uh, complicated.” Simeon gave a Gallic shrug.

“You told me you want to see him again. What’s complicated about it?”

“You know… feelings and shit. Baggage.”

“His or yours?”

“Both. Jesus Peety.” Simeon exhaled loudly and slumped to sit on the bed, raking his hands through his black hair. “He’s soooo fucking hot. But we’re both broken. I don’t know if I’m the man to… I’ve never had a proper boyfriend. I’ve never been a proper boyfriend. Does he even want a boyfriend? I mean. The man is still grieving, and he’s all kinds of messed up. I have all kinds of shit going on myself, and I just don’t think I can do this.” Simeon exclaimed, a hint of alarm in his French timbre as the words babbled out.

“Do you like him?”

“I don’t know him. I like what I see, but I haven’t spent enough time with him to know if I want more than hot monkey sex.”

“And that’s why this dinner party is such good timing, no?” Pieter smiled triumphantly.

“Look. We’re all grown up now, and this is what grown-ups do, Sim.” Pieter said, knowing all too well that the Simeon he knew before his breakdown was a Grindr addict as well as a substance abuser. “From an outsider view it’s clear you like him, he likes you. Yes, your first time together was …fucked up beyond belief, but you both talked about it like adults and apologized, yeah. That’s progress, no? If you felt unsafe with him, you would tell me, yeah?”

“You think he likes me?” Simeon sighed, the insecurity all too evident.

“Uh, yeah!”

“What happened was both of our faults. I don’t think he’s a violent man. I don’t feel unsafe with him… Me on the other hand…”

“Oh, Gahh’d, I know! Your temper is legendary. To be honest, I would actually be more worried for him.” That comment got Pieter another jab in the ribs. “So, we have a nice relaxed dinner and all get to know each other a little. If you both get on then, you know what to do next.”

“Fine” Simeon exhaled.

Excerpt

Reid left Harris to peruse the menu, refreshing drinks and chatting with other customers. But even while he remained busy, his attention stayed hung up on the newcomer. By the time he came back around to Harris, the man was staring at him again, chin resting in one hand, the other drumming a simple rhythm on the bar. Reid smiled at him, ignoring the swooping sensation in his stomach.

“What’ll it be?” Reid asked.

“Since I liked your first recommendation, I thought you could give me another,” Harris said, a suggestive smile playing on his lips.

Reid knew Harris meant something off-menu. Preferably in a bedroom. Reid also knew he should shut this down now. It had gone on too long already. He plastered on a distant but friendly smile and said, “Fish ‘n chips. We use rockfish, which has a richer fish flavor if that’s what you’re looking for. Cod can be a little bland. We have cod, too, if you’d prefer.”

Harris pushed the menu toward Reid, all traces of his flirtatious behavior gone. “That sounds good. The rockfish.”

Reid kept the smile on his face, though a hollow ache had suddenly bloomed behind his stomach. Disappointment. In himself for not going along with Harris' suggestive behavior and letting himself have a little fun. He was surprised to find that he wished he had given a different answer, that maybe the night could have taken a different turn for both of them. He resisted the urge to try and salvage it, to flirt back with Harris.

"Coming right up," Reid said instead, heading toward the kitchen.

Julie’s kitchen was on top of it tonight, and Harris’ order came up quickly. Harris ate in silence, though Reid felt the weight of those incredible eyes. They held a sad mystery in them, one that Reid wanted to discover. But Reid had his hands full with drink orders and customers at the bar, the night picking up rapidly. The Irish drinking songs had already begun in the dining room, much to Sasha’s chagrin.

"These men know nothing," she groused. Reid laughed. Sasha had immigrated from Russia only a short time ago. Reid didn’t know much of her past besides what Sasha had been willing to share. He knew she used to be a ballerina, but she remained stubbornly closed-lipped about the rest. Including the family she left behind. Her thick accent threw a lot of customers off at first, but she was generally friendly unless you said the wrong thing to the wrong person.

"They're still paying customers, Sasha," he said as she hefted another heavy tray full of beer.

She muttered something in Russian as she wandered off. Harris snorted and laughed at his end of the bar.

"She's got a mouth on her," he said.

"You understood that?" Reid asked, curious.

"Yeah," Harris said, finishing off his beer. Reid noticed that his plate was empty, with only a used lemon slice and a little bit of tartar left in its bowl.

Reid's curiosity and interest in the man ratcheted up ten-fold. It had been hard enough to convince himself to stick to his principles without Harris proving to be even more interesting.

Instead of asking Harris how he knew Russian or even what Sasha had said like he so desperately wanted to, Reid gathered Harris' plate and took it into the back. Then he printed Harris' tab and slid it his way with an easy smile.

"I hope you enjoy your stay in Seaside," he said and left Harris to it, though every ounce of his being screamed in protest as he walked away.

A few minutes later, well after Reid had watched Harris slip out the door without so much as a wave goodbye, Sasha picked up Harris’ receipt and let out a sharp curse in Russian. At least, Reid had always thought it was a curse. She said it a lot. Reid abandoned the drink he had been pouring and made his way to Sasha’s side.

"What is it?" he asked, looking over her shoulder. Then he choked on air as surprise shot through him.

Large loopy letters spelling out one-thousand dollars resided on the tip line.

Life, writing and a quick trip to the Isle of Wight.

Good morning to you all. A delayed hello from me as the Easter holidays have been busy busy. I'm taking my son back to uni on Friday. I can't believe three weeks have gone by already.

As you can see from the photo. I did a day visit to a rainy Isle of Wight to visit my favourite islander, K.C. Wells. She was all bright and rainbowy in a grey day. I wish I could get down to see her more often. Behind us is the Lighthouse. We will back there in a few months. I also managed to slip again in those boots on my way to the ferry. I hurt... I'm not designed to do the splits.

I also had friends to dinner and didn't kill them with my cooking. Baked Camembert for starters with crusty Tiger (giraffe) bread. My guests hoovered the lot.

Writing is sporadic and I have a brain full of mush but I've kept my commitment to my Patrons. I posted the third instalment of Cranky & Dashing yesterday. $1/month and you get to read my exclusive series.

I'm off the office in about half an hour to see Clare London. I've got a serious writing session planned. Then tonight I have to skip out the front room as we're changing the broadband and cable provider. Wish me luck. That corner of the room hasn't been touched in years.

A reminder that all my self-pubbed books can be found on Kindle Unlimited now. I have two blog posts with the links, starting here.

Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical.
